Stress Awareness Month
1st - 30th April 2022
Mental Health is the leading cause of sickness absence (mentalhealth.org.uk). This includes everything from anxiety to bipolar disorder, and in particular stress-related illness. In the recent years prior to the coronavirus pandemic, the rate of self-reported work- related stress, depression or anxiety had shown signs of increasing. In 2020/21 the rate was higher than the 2018/19 pre-coronavirus levels. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in 2020/2021 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 50% of all work-related ill health cases.

Testimonials
"We thoroughly enjoyed our session with International Wellbeing Insights. The session was well received by our staff, and we had positive feedback from all participants. The workshop itself was highly engaging and informative but above all, it created a safe space where we could honestly reflect and share with each other, our challenges, and successes with our personal wellbeing. We are very pleased with the service and support provided and we are looking forward to working with the team again.”

“The International Wellbeing Insights provided us with great support and met the objectives set for the sessions. The trainings were highly engaging and informative, which encouraged participation from our managers and enhanced their awareness of stress and wellbeing. The highlight for us was raising the managers' awareness around mental health which is a vital part of their role as managers of people.
The managers found the input very practical and relevant. International Wellbeing Insights understood our challenges and provided us with viable solutions.”

“I’m head of people support in an organisation that had very little focus on wellbeing when I first joined. People were working long hours and taking leave instead of sick leave. This meant people were tired out and stressed. I had worked with the Stress Management Society in a previous role and asked them to do a workshop for us. Following this, we found that people really engaged with the new culture of wellbeing and looked to work more efficiently and take care of themselves, rather than continually working long hours for the sake of it. The session kick-started our wellbeing focus and increased the levels of wellbeing throughout our organisation. We went on to win a CIPD High Commendation award for our wellbeing in 2018. Don’t underestimate the impact of introducing the SMS to your organisation!”

Why is Stress Awareness Month Important?
The Centre for Mental Health predicted that at least 500,000 more people in the UK may experience ill mental health as a result of the pandemic. The restrictions have led to an increase in loneliness, stress and anxiety within the British public. Research shows that one third of UK woman are suffering from lockdown loneliness and the rates of suicidal thoughts in young people are increasing.
Unsurprisingly the impact of COVID-19 has also been identified within the workforce. A 2020 investigation by ORACLE and Workplace Intelligence has highlighted some shocking figures.
Out of the 12,000 employees that took part in the study:
- 78% admit the pandemic has negatively affected their health
- 76% believe their company should be doing more to protect the mental health of their workforce
- 85% say their mental health issues are causing sleep deprivation, poor physical health, reduced happiness at home, suffering family relationships, or isolation from friends
Does this sound familiar?
The worrying statistics confirm concerns for a suffering workforce, heavily impacted by the effect of COVID-19. The data demonstrates that many organisations will witness a prominent impact on the team. Reinforcing this, experts are urging companies to ensure the psychological, mental and emotional impact of the pandemic is assessed as part of any staff engagement surveys or risk assessment.
